Summary
Malaria is a major public health problem associated with slow socioeconomic development and poverty and the most frequently reported disease at both public and private health facilities in Uganda.
Challenges
Uganda has the sixth highest number of annual deaths from malaria in Africa, as well as some of the highest reported malaria transmission rates in the world. The socioeconomic impact of malaria includes out-of-pocket expenditure for consultation fees, drugs, transport and subsistence at a distant health facility. Household expenditure for malaria treatment is also a high burden to the Ugandan population, consuming a larger proportion of the incomes in the poorest households.
When most people lie down to sleep in their beds, they do not think about how much of a luxury it is. Many children in Uganda, however, are forced to sleep on piles of rags on a hard mud floor. Not only is this uncomfortable, but it puts these children at risk of parasites, bug bites and accompanying diseases, affecting their performance at school.
Our Solution
Despite the concerted efforts to increase treated nets coverage, the volume of nets remained too low . We would love to change that by trying to provide a treated mosquito net to every child that we come across.
In Uganda, mattresses and beds are considered luxuries for children and their families living in poverty.
If you want to help Ugandan children start their lives in a healthy way, consider donating a mattress and mosquito net through our Child Gifts https://hopendotoafrica.org/gift-list/. For $60, you can provide a mattress and a mosquito net for a child in Uganda. However, the impact you will make does not end with that child. Because each mattress may be shared by at least two siblings, you can ensure that you are helping multiple members of a family ward off disease and get a better night’s sleep, which is crucial to good health. Additionally, the mattresses are made locally, which means your donation will also make a positive impact on the local economy.
How you can help.
Please consider purchasing a mattress or another gift through our Ways to Give-Child Gifts catalog to help us fight child poverty and ensure that children we serve can get the start they need to live happy, healthy and productive lives.
