Frequently Asked Questions

Upendo Teams

Who can go?

Anyone aged 17 or over (on the dates of travel) is welcome to apply for a team. Hope Ndoto organises teams each year for individuals but we also welcome groups who want to work with us. We work with teams from companies, schools, churches and various other organizations so if you think that your local group would be up for a new challenge, do get in touch!

Do I need to have had any skills or past experience to be on a team?n Tab

No, although if you do feel that you have a particular skill or talent, let us know and we will try to accommodate it as best as we can. Otherwise, training and preparation will be provided through a series of orientation meetings with a Hope Ndoto Africa staff.

Hope Ndoto Africa is a Christian–based organization. Do I need to be a Christian to go on a team?

No. Although Hope Ndoto Africa is an organisation based in the Christian faith, you do not have to be a Christian to participate as a team member. We do ask, however, that team members would respect the Christian ethos and individuals of the organization both in the countries teams are coming from and in Uganda.

How many people are in a team?

Normally teams have between 10 – 20 members. We insist that there is a least one team leader and one assistant leader per team.

How much does it cost and what does the cost include?

Team membership costs approximately $3,000 which can be fundraised. The team will also take on additional fundraising for their ‘Team Project’ which they will work alongside whilst in Uganda.
This includes flights, accommodation, transport, food and drink, team t–shirts and administration costs. It does not include vaccination costs.

When can I go?

Teams travel mainly between May – September but if you’re hoping to take a team, Hope Ndoto Africa would be happy to discuss potential options for dates.

Where do teams visit?

All of our teams visit our projects in Uganda although different teams will travel to different regions of the country depending on the projects that they’d like to work on.

How can I apply?

You can register your initial interest here (insert link to info@hopendotoafrica.org) Once we receive your interest, the Teams Coordinator will get in touch with you.

Team Leaders

I am interested in leading a team. What does this involve?

Leading a team is a big commitment. The team process lasts from the moment you sign on and often long after the team return but it is a very rewarding experience. Hope Ndoto Africa provides support throughout the process and work closely with the team leader to ensure that things are running smoothly but ultimately it is up to the team leader to make sure that things are progressing with the team and that they are prepared and ready for the trip. If you are considering leading a team, please email Hope Ndoto Africa( Info@hopendotoafrica.org) Office and ask to speak with the Teams Coordinator who will be happy to chat it over with you.

Sponsorship FAQS

Hope Ndoto Africa has now been running a child sponsorship program since 2012. We believe in child sponsorship because it connects people like you with children that are miles away and gives you the opportunity to develop a unique and personal relationship with your sponsor child. Each sponsor child gets the opportunity to go to school, a new school uniform, exercise books and stationary, lunchtime meals where possible and access to First Aid and sanitary products.

What is a sponsor?

To become a sponsor is to extend friendship and love to a desperately needy child in Uganda. War, drought, famine and disease especially AIDS have left thousands of children orphaned or in extreme poverty in this part of the world. Every day is a life and death struggle for children not strong enough to withstand disease because hunger has weakened their bodies. Your monthly gift provides a basic education, and other necessities such as medical care, lunches, etc. Not only will you be a tremendous blessing to the child you assist, but in turn you will experience great joy as you see your child mature and grow, exchange letters and photos.

How much does it cost?

Just $35 per month you can help to give a child a brighter future.

Can I write to my sponsored child?

Yes! We encourage you to write letters to your child. When you set up your account we will give you an address that you can send mail to. Your child will write back to you, but please remember that many of them have never been to school before and cannot form letters yet on their own!

How often should I write to my child?

We recommend up to three times a year. However it is entirely up to yourself, so if you are not a writer, please do not feel that you must write every month.

Can I send gifts (toys, clothes etc. ) to my sponsored child?

All children love to receive gifts! However, there are many obstacles to overcome in sending gifts to developing countries such as Uganda. We recommend not sending large gifts to your child but perhaps including small gifts with your letter eg stickers and balloons. Sponsors wishing to give a gift may do so by visiting our website in Ways to give section and chose a gift to send and the Sponsorship Department will purchase this gift(s) and send you photos as your child receives this gift and a thank you note as well. At Christmas we normally promote this to bring joy into the lives and families of your sponsored child.

How much of my $35 goes to Africa?

Hope Ndoto Africa sends 95% of your donation to Uganda for children in Primary and Secondary school. That is the minimum donation amount to sponsor a child. This will cover school fees, school uniforms, scholastic materials, hot meals where possible, basic medical treatment and also the development of their education. For example, any money left over from all the children attending one school, may go towards building a new classroom. Sponsors have the option to include an extra donation. Part of this additional money is used to cover children whose sponsors are unable to continue with sponsorship. The remaining 5% is kept and used to help find new sponsors, giving even more children the chance of an education. Administration costs are covered through generous sponsors who pay extra voluntary donations and through General Fund Gift.
Note: For donors outside the U.S.A we set the rate in your local currency, as exchange rates vary over time, but Hope Ndoto Africa commit to send the same amount per child to Uganda.

What do I receive?

A photo and short personal history of your child. The opportunity to correspond with your child, who will write to you 3 times a year. A history of the child’s native country. The joy of knowing you’re making a difference to a needy child

Can I sponsor from anywhere in the world?

Yes! We would love sponsors in Europe, America, Africa, Asia and Australia. We ask our international sponsors to pay a little extra to cover additional postage costs and a small online charge from credit cards.

Payment Methods

You can pay by Direct Debit, within the U.S.A only. You can also pay online from anywhere in the world using credit and debit cards.
If neither of these options suits you, please do get in touch with our office to arrange an alternative method of payment.
