Skills Development

Summary

Through our Skills Development program, we are working with guardians and parents to establish sustainable, secure, and nutritious sources of food and incomes for our families. Our program is evolving from nutrition education and seed distribution, to include community outreach events, training, livestock management, building livestock shelters, taking part in agricultural and livestock cooperatives, fabrication and tailoring. These initiatives produce food and economic opportunity for the families, and also strengthen community knowledge of the connections between food, nutrition, health and job creation.

Through our “Ways to Help – Gift A Child” catalog, our children received a goat from their sponsors. A dairy goat can supply a family with about 2-3 quarts of milk a day. Any extra milk can be sold, families learn to use goat manure to fertilize gardens, and because goats often have 2 or 3 kids a year, they can earn more income. Each goat provides a valuable source of protein, income from the sale of offspring, milk and natural fertilizer to nourish crops and soil.

Our goal is to help offset the rising food costs that have left guardians and parents struggling to provide food for their families. In order to help promote self-sufficiency,  efficacy and lead to healthier- more focused children we hope to purchase:

  •  20 acres of land
  • livestock including pigs, goats, cows and other animals
  • seeds
  • farming tools
  • Birds for eggs and meat
  • hire a farm trainer and manager.
